At Earth's General Store we offer visitors information and products that will help them reduce their ecological and social impact on the planet and all inhabitants. We are a distributor of information and knowledge, encouraging people to consume less, consume wisely, consume locally, consume fairly and love lots more! We do this by offering items that have beneficial advantages - local, certified organic, Fair Trade Certified, in bulk (less packaging), water and energy efficiency products, information, and support to act! We are attempting to offer a way of life that is balanced and respectful of the planet and all its creatures. I know this sounds a little wishy washy but I believe that is our ultimate goal in life - do as little harm as possible and leave the world better than when we arrived. One of the intimate ways that we interact with the environment is through the food we eat. We have the power to choose food that has less impact on the environment, society and other beings. We can eat less meat, choose food that is grown locally and organically and to buy in bulk. In February 2010 Earth’s General Store moved and expand our inventory to include food products. We now offer fresh, packaged, chilled and frozen organic products. We are a real Health Food Store - offering healthy food for your body, your spirit and the planet. We continue to carry the products that we have offered the citizens of Edmonton since 1991 like worms for composting, cloth diapers for the green parents, animal free personal care products, and reusable menstrual products. We have the most experience of any store or organization in Edmonton on green lifestyle. If you want to help make the world a better place Earth’s General Store may be of great assistance to help you along the path.

Marketing Survey - Help us be better!

As many of you are aware we are having problems with the downtown store (lack of customers). The Whyte Avenue store and our bank account is suffering trying to carry this extra load. I did not expect it to be this bad.

So to try and adjust to what we have heard are some of the changes that we could make we will be introducing meat to the downtown store and are having regular weekly sale days (10% OFF Tuesdays and 10% Wednesdays for Seniors).

In addition we would like to hear from you. Please consider completing the accompanying survey so that we can better serve you and our community.

Change in Direction for Earth's General Store - Downtown

People and businesses change over time. Hopefully these changes are good for the people, their friends and family, their customers, the planet and society.

The founding statement of the store is – “To offer people information and products that help them to reduce their impact on the environment and society”. I believe we have stayed true to my founding statement.

Basically we try to help people lighten their ecological footprint and therefore reduce our collective debt. We do this by offering information (we became an information hub), products that were 'better' (had some sort of environmental, health, resource efficient, organic, fair trade, local, etc) and we offered support for people that wanted to make changes – big and small – in their lives.

Green Acts Rewards - YOUR Action Make a Difference

The results of your green actions over the last period has created the purchase of a bicycle for a person in Africa (World Bicycle Relief), money to Bikeology (the local organization that coordinates Bike Month – in June), and money to the Edmonton Bicycle Commuters' Society (EBC).

A total of over $400 will be distributed to these groups (it was a longer period than usual).

Thank you for reusing your shopping bags, refilling your containers and walking, bicycling and using transit to commute to the store.

Small actions add up and we can make a difference.

The recipients for the next period will be ACT Alberta, The Gulabi Gang, and The Metta School in Nepal.

Local Organic Produce at Earth's General Store

This year we were able to expand our offering of locally grown organic produce. We helped The Organic Box out by taking some of their excess produce, we continued our relationship with Sparrow's Nest Organics and we added a great variety of produce from Mans Organics in Coaldale, AB.

As the season change we will adjusting what we can obtain from local organic growers and will move our supply sources to BC, Washington, Oregon, California, and Mexico (in that order).

Currently we have the following produce from Coaldale, Alberta:

  • Long English cucumbers
  • 6 packs of Mini Cucumbers
  • White onions
  • red onions
  • yellow onions (bulk)
  • shallots
  • squash (almost all of our squash this fall has come from Coaldale. The only exceptions were pumpkins, acorn squash, and the occasional Butternut or Carnival squash. Currently, we have Black Futsu, Butternut, Buttercup, Delicata, Spaghetti, Baby Blue Hubbard, and Red Kuri)
  • tomatoes - Beefsteak, Cherry clamshells, and Cocktail

We also still have 25# bags of potatoes from Dapp, AB for $20!!! Amazing deal on local potatoes!

Over the summer we had the following items from a variety of sources:

Earth's General Store DOWNTOWN - Cash Mobbed!

Earlier this month Cash Mob and the Local Good brought the focus of a crowd to Earth's General Store Downtown. They recognize the value that Earth's General Store brings to Edmonton and to the Downtown community and want to see us survive. Thank you Cash Mob YEG and The Local Good for honouring us by mobbing us :)

Shaw TV did a thorough job of documenting the Cash Mob (Thank you Shaw TV). You can watch the video clip on YouTube.

Putting money in our local economy is VERY important for me because I understand the value it brings to our greater community. Cash Mobbing highlights this in an enjoyable event but it needs to be an ongoing process/commitment. It can't be a one off token gesture. It means that instead of spending all you money in one business – multinational or even local you spread it around and try and put the money in as many locally owned businesses/services that one can.

Wonderful Dry and Warm Fall is NOT Great for OUR Trees - Water Your Trees for the Winter

It has been a really wonderful fall this year but it has been very dry. Our trees are going to into their dormant state – leaves are falling and the ground will start to freeze. To embark on this phase of their lives they usually have ground moisture to not only help them move their nutrients through their hydrological system but if there is not enough moisture in the ground to adequate freeze their root mass they run the risk of sudden temperature rises throughout the winter months.

Just like all of us trees need a healthy sleep. They don’t like being disturbed by temperature changes that can wake them up. If this happens it weakens them and make them susceptible to diseases.

Dry ground doesn’t freeze. It is the moisture in the soil that freezes and the bigger the block of ice water the more resistant it is to thawing. One way to help them out at this time of transition is to thoroughly soak the ground around their roots.

The best way to do this is to use a root watering spike. The ones you can buy at most greenhouse/garden centres/hardware stores is like the one in the photograph below (I got mine from Apache Seeds several years ago). This put the water directly into the ground a couple of feet down.

Mobile Food Information Resources

Today I saw a post by Food Tank regarding apps for smart phones that helps people choose foods that are local, in season, non-GMO, health or pesticide information.

Food Revolution also has a good listing.

I thought that people reading this blog would be interested in some of them. These are links that focus on resources from the USA but some of them will relate to our foods in Canada.

Thanks for caring for our planet and thefood you choose :)

Happy Thanksgiving
