At Earth's General Store we offer visitors information and products that will help them reduce their ecological and social impact on the planet and all inhabitants. We are a distributor of information and knowledge, encouraging people to consume less, consume wisely, consume locally, consume fairly and love lots more! We do this by offering items that have beneficial advantages - local, certified organic, Fair Trade Certified, in bulk (less packaging), water and energy efficiency products, information, and support to act! We are attempting to offer a way of life that is balanced and respectful of the planet and all its creatures. I know this sounds a little wishy washy but I believe that is our ultimate goal in life - do as little harm as possible and leave the world better than when we arrived. One of the intimate ways that we interact with the environment is through the food we eat. We have the power to choose food that has less impact on the environment, society and other beings. We can eat less meat, choose food that is grown locally and organically and to buy in bulk. In February 2010 Earth’s General Store moved and expand our inventory to include food products. We now offer fresh, packaged, chilled and frozen organic products. We are a real Health Food Store - offering healthy food for your body, your spirit and the planet. We continue to carry the products that we have offered the citizens of Edmonton since 1991 like worms for composting, animal free personal care products, and reusable menstrual products. We have the most experience of any store or organization in Edmonton on green lifestyle. If you want to help make the world a better place Earth’s General Store may be of great assistance to help you along the path.

Winter Bike to Work Day FREE Breakfast

Whew! 2015 is starting off with lots of events.

Most people know that I love organic, community, and cycling.

On February 13th we will be participating in the International Winter Bike to Work Day by hosting a FREE Pancake breakfast.

The breakfast will include blueberry pancakes (flour mix provided by Gold Forest Grains - local organic grain grower), Fair Trade coffee and tea (the coffee is roasted fresh at our south side store), organic maple syrup, organic butter or vegan alternatives and lots of chatting with fellow Edmonton cyclists.

Hot pancakes and coffee should be ready to be consumed by 7am on Friday, February 13. This is taking place at our downtown Organic Cafe (Earth's General Store, 10150 - 104th Street).

Please sign up on the Facebook page.

You can also register your ride on the Winter Bike to Work organisers page at (and/or their Facebook page). This is a friendly 'competition' with cites around the world. I reckon Edmonton has enough winter cyclists to make us a contender to be well recognized as a winter cycling city.

Let's put Edmonton on the Winter Cycling Map!

Crickets - A Sustainable Source of Animal Protein

There is much in the media these days about the negetative impact that our society's consumption/overconsumption of meat has on the planet, the earth's resources and our health.

Meat, meat production, and meat consumption has a heavy food print. The resources that go into the raising of meat is greater than any other source of food our society consumes.

We eat meat as a source of protein but there are many sources of protein. All plants have protein in them and some plant based sources have significant percentages of protein but these source may not be enough to meet the demand for more protein brought about by our ever increasing global population.

One source of protein that is being explored as a more sustainable source of protein is to consume insects. They convert food into protein about 6 times more efficiently than cows do and use a significantly less water and other resources.

Earth's General Store is Edmonton's first food store to offer certified organic crickets as a protein source.

Our suppliers of these insects is Next Millennium Farms in Ontario. Check out their website for more information.

Marketing Survey - Help us be better!

As many of you are aware we are having problems with the downtown store (lack of customers). The Whyte Avenue store and our bank account is suffering trying to carry this extra load. I did not expect it to be this bad.

So to try and adjust to what we have heard are some of the changes that we could make we will be introducing meat to the downtown store and are having regular weekly sale days (10% OFF Tuesdays and 10% Wednesdays for Seniors).

In addition we would like to hear from you. Please consider completing the accompanying survey so that we can better serve you and our community.
