June 1st, 2010Daiya Cheese is here in Edmonton at Earth's General Store. I received 360 pounds of Daiya vegan/lactose free cheese yesterday. 180 pounds of Mozzarella (Italian) and 180 pounds of Cheddar flavour. Both products are shredded. This should be enough to sate the appetites of many vegans in Edmonton (we even received an order query from Winnipeg today). The cheese comes in packages of 5 pounds (2.27 kg) because it is mostly directed to the food industry. But 5 pounds of cheese is a lot of product for a one or two person household so what we do is repackage in small zip lock bags (packaging size does vary greatly but since we sell by weight you only pay for what you by at that time). We are presently charging $17.00 per kilogram (down from $18.00/kg I was initially charging for the first box of product I carried back from BC). If you purchase the full 5 pound bags then you get a 5% bulk discount. This would mean that the five pound package would cost you around $36.75.This week I am going to talk with a local cafe to see if they will use the product to make some of their menu products with it. My intent is that they will use the Daiya product to offer vegan and lactose free pizzas, quesadillas, and grilled cheese sandwiches. I will let you know how it goes so that you can go and show your support for this initiative. From what I understand Daiay will be introducing the smaller consumer pack to the Canadian consumer in the next month or so but I wanted to get the product in sooner (I have been trying to figure out the logistics with Daiya foods since February when Darren Vandstone mentioned it to me).Come on down for some yummy vegan cheese. The inventory is continuing but the majority of it is over and now I have to figure out how to get some of the information into the computer. |
